10. The Ethiopian Famine, 1983-1985
The famine that lasted for two years caused an estimated 400,000 death tolls in northern Ethiopia alone. The massive famine brought on by a severe drought that struck the country in the early 1980s. Particularly in the north, the lack of rain caused acres upon acres of crops to wither and die, resulting in a countrywide food shortage. The situation was exacerbated by government instability and corruption, as well as the presence of numerous and powerful insurgent groups that hampered international relief efforts. Apparently, Ethiopia’s economy is solely based in Agriculture. In fact, almost half of their GDP, 60% of exports and 80% of total employment come from agriculture.
